China Sentences Teacher To Death Over School Attack

On Friday the Intermediate People’s Court of Zhanjian City convicted and sentenced Chen Kangbing, age 33, to death for the knife attack he launched against a school in southern China.

In April Mr. Kangbing attacked a primary school in the city of Leizhou in which he wounded 16 students in a classroom and their teacher. Chen, a former teacher, had been on sick leave since mid 2006 because he had been suffering from mental illness.

Although nobody was killed in Mr. Kangbing’s attack his actions are just the latest in a long string of attacks on schools in China that have both parents and the Chinese government extremely worried over the safety of students.

Some human rights activists accuse China of using Mr. Kangbing’s attack as a way to appease public anger and fear and say that Chen’s sentencing doesn’t fit the crime considering nobody had lost their life in the attack.

Others say that the punishment is just and is needed in order to send a message to others who may be thinking of joining the string of attacks that have plagued China for the past two months.
