President Barack Obama made a visit to the nations auto industry capitol in Detroit, Michigan. He told a crowd of workers that the government bailouts for General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC , are giving taxpayers a return on their investment.
Preceding into Congressional election season, polls show that the public is questioning the $84.8 billion rescue. In addition polls show the public is overwrought about the economy.President Obama is using Detroit area plants owned by General Motors and Chrysler to promote industry revival that has saved more than a million jobs. The President said, “The fact that we’re standing in this magnificent factory today is a testament to the decisions we made. They said we should just walk away and let those jobs go. Today, this industry is growing stronger. It’s creating new jobs.”
Obama addressed over one thousand workers when he said if his opponents had been successful in blocking his aid for automakers, their jobs might not exist.Later he added their efforts are “proving the naysayers wrong.”
Despite the impressive message from the president, not everyone is satisfied.According to the Bloomberg National Poll performed from July 9th to the 12th, 48% of the voters became less supportive in recent months versus 17 percent who say they have become more supportive.
General motors, Ford Motors and Chrysler escaped bankruptcy about a year ago.Within the past year, all three motor companies re-hired 55,000 workers, after trimming down 334,000 workers the year before. In addition to the results, all three companies reported a profit in the first quarter for 2010.This was the first time any of these three companies gained a profit since 2004.
