Only time will tell whether everyone can expect two next generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft after Nintendo themselves has recently introduced the much anticipated Wii U in E3 convention this year.
There are many reports published in the internet that suggesting the console that will replace the PlayStation 3 is indeed coming, one of them is a report saying that Sony executives has revealed that the PS4 is in the company’s planning. There is also a rumor claiming that Sony has started manufacturing the PS4 consoles for the mass market and are ready for the production next year.
While for Microsoft, the Xbox 720 has been reportedly in the cards after a popular game studio has make a statement that they are expecting the company to started doing so. It remains to be seen whether the Americans will started to see Xbox 720 console in the market as early as next year.
All in all, these PS4 and Xbox 720 reports are just rumors, as always we can definitely take them with a pinch of salt.

I believe that the Xbox franchise does not need to expand for at least another 3 years considering how the Microsoft company has found new ways to entertain the public eye. As far as technological advancements go, Microsoft and the Xbox franchise go, They released the Kinect for the Xbox not longer than 2years ago and the Xbox console was released as far back since 2005 so Sony and the PlayStation franchise are getting blown out of the water as far as I’m concerned, especially since PlayStation was under the difficulties from hackers and code breakers. So In an eye-opening statement, new consoles are not exactly needed seeing how companies have taken just an updated model from a console that was marketed from 2005 since and still has kept the global population entertained. All in all, if companies can make updated models of the consoles that already exist instead of making completely new models, these companies like Sony and Microsoft etc. could push the envelope for human entertainment and money on a global scale so it may be in there best interest, (P.S. I side with Microsoft only because of the way they sustain there consoles capabilities!)

It’s hardly surprising that after the announcement of the Wii U, that we are getting rumours of new consoles from the other big two. But really, if Sony were going into production for next year, devs would have had dev-kits for some time and we would expect much more information to have leaked.
They might announce a new machine next year, for 2013/14, but the likelihood of them actually launching one in 2012 seems very small.
