In an interview with IndustryGamers published just yesterday, Mike Capps, the man who leads Epic Games said that Apple’s iPhone should be enough to make console makers to think again of their plan to launch follow-up devices.
“If you look at the ridiculous acceleration of iPhone hardware and technology, trying to find a sweet spot for tech to make your mobile game… I mean, what would your mobile game look like in 2015?” Capps added in the interview with IndustryGamers. “Who knows how fast that’s going to operate, but you can bet it’s going to be faster than an Xbox 360.”
Capps, whose gaming company is well known for the Xbox 360′s exclusive Gears of War franchise, reiterated that the current state of industry will need to “deal with iPhone 8.” That smartphone device, he says, “will probably plug into your TV, or better yet, wirelessly connect to your television set to give you that big screen gaming experience with good sound.
“So really, what’s the point of those next-gen consoles?” he argued.
Nintendo might want to disagree with Capps sentiment. At the last E3 gaming expo back in June, the Japanese company unveiled the Wii U, the next addition in its long line of home consoles family. The device, which is scheduled to launch for a 2012 release, is widely expected to provide much more powerful graphics than its predecessor, the Wii and come with an innovative controller featuring a 6.2-inch touch screen that lets gamers interact with on-screen content and have the ability to continue gameplay on it while away from the console.
Recent speculations suggest Microsoft and Sony are also in the process of launching their version of next generation consoles in the coming years. In July last month, Neal Robinson, AMD’s director of ISV relationship management, spoke to Official Xbox Magazine in an interview that the new and upcoming Xbox will come “pretty darn close” to boast the graphical sophistication of 2009 blockbuster hit 3D movie “Avatar.” Unfortunately, Robinson didn’t stated when that device might launch.
Earlier in 2011, however, popular gaming blog Kotaku reported that Sony and Microsoft were readying their next consoles for 2014 release. To date, neither company has confirmed that report.
Capps isn’t the only person in believing that those launches might not make sense. Last year, Eric Brown, Electronic Arts CFO said that there is simply no solid reason for hardware makers to hit the button and release new consoles anytime soon.
“Today we have two of the three consoles that operate in full high-definition and are running games at 60 frames per second,” Brown said. “If you step back and say if it’s a multibillion capital dollar investment for the next generation, the question I would ask is ‘if you were to produce that then what would you display it on?’ There’s really nothing in terms of broadly available consumer viewing technology other than 1080p flat panel televisions. And so you could upgrade in theory, but you wouldn’t get the obvious graphical benefit that we saw really drove the sharp transitions in the prior cycle.”
So what do you think will happen next? For me, it’s hard to say at this point. But given the tradition we have seen before, the Wii U will most likely be followed up by new consoles probably named as Xbox 720 and PS4 from Microsoft and Sony respectively — regardless the fact that some game developers think it’s a bad move or not.

Well when you think about it the Ps3 and 360 have the same processing power of 7900gtx card which was made by nvidia and the RSX chip that is in the PS3 was also made by Nvidia , now when you think of it i think a 8800gt has 128 stream processors which trumped the 7900gtx by along shot 35-40% in performance now the latest cards have 192-512 stream processors per card. now i have 2 gtx 460 sli’ed that is 672 stream processors,which is 6x the performance now if you sli 2 580gtx you get 1024 stream processors which is 10 times the processing power of a ps3. Now do you think that phone can keep up with a ps4 that will be able to produce 10-15x more processing power than the ps3.The point is that phones and tablets will only ever be shrunk down versions of the real thing. DX11 I think is a big improvement in the right direction tessellation , dept of field, and more advanced Physx is something that you can only get with raw horse power hardware. And yes I have been laid I have 2 kids and 1 on the way

to add to that the next gen gpu tech is suppose to be 4x (tesla chip) the current by the end of this year and by 2013 it is supposed to be 16x or 18x(maxwell chip) (youtube Nvidia roadmap 2011) the raw power of to days current hardware and you already know that MS and sony know about this and are going to implement this technology into there new hardware. So why wait ? Because the hardware is taking such a dramatic leap in 2013 and the prices for chips that are 18x more powerful by 2014 even the low end 80-100$ chips will trump todays latest and greatest tablets are going to be on a 40nm chip for a while next gen are going to be on a 22nm and lower by the end of the year. cell phones wont even up to par with a psp till next year.

Ummmm, we need new technology because we’ve peaked in what we have now. There are games being made and watching to make sure it can work with what we have. If you keep one thing, you just repeat games… Geez Mike sorry they maxed out the consoles potential, gotta keep the market open to have new technology to make more money!

if you produce a new console in 2012 it will be a turtle in 2013 because of the 18x greater tech bump in silicon chip design,one of the biggest in a decade . Intel just announced a 3d transistor chip design that is going to revolutionize our way we use technology and it isnt due out till 1st-2nd quarter 2012 so why wouldn’t console maker wait till they can get this tech for cheaper and wait till 2013 to start to produce the next gen consoles on the 3d 22nm transistor design? It makes sense to me.

If I ever wanted something to play a game on it’s always been a mobile phone.

The game killing mechanics of the phone not doing what you want when you use a button on the touch screen
The heat from the CPU being so over worked that it’s now had to reset itself.
Sure people use games on a mobile but it’s not exactly the best platform and to have people pretend it is, is laughable really.
This guy make his money on the PC, and pretty much only do the console side now, and probably wants to drop everything just for the iphone he can do it but epic won’t be around for long.

Mobile devices are getting faster and faster….however, they’re just now beginning to catch up to the ps3 and xbox 360 ..by the time the ps4 and xbox 720 comes out….mobile devices will again be behind them and it will take them another 4 or so years to catch up….I’m sorry but a mobile device will never be equal to a state of the art PC or game console.

LOL, he’s right, gears of war 1 might have been able to play on xbox, halo 3 was really made for xbox and you can tell. In all honesty, a lot of people won’t buy a 720 anytime soon. On the other hand, games like Gears could become smoother and have more actions per character.
The funny part was there were rumors that Gears or War 3 was going to be a “720″ exclusive or whatever the name was for 2012. Of course, Microsoft who lost money in development and manufacturing costs took a hit when they moved onto the 360.
I am not impeding game progress, but I will be playing gears 3 for four years. Hopefully, my XBLA Gold account will work with my 360 past that, or their will have to be a hell of game to get me buy a new system.

Well Mike Capps is wrong, i believe 95 % of all ps3 games are native 720p and below, running at 60 hz.
The games that run at full 1920x1080p are games like, tekken Dark Resurrection and others psn games.
But new ps3 games never run at native 1080p, the ps3 just upscales them, with the loss of around 30 hz.
And it get’s worse with 3d, where programmers are having to cut 720p res to even lower just to render it with reasonable 30 hz for each eye.
So we are far from full HD gaming on consoles.
A ps4 would have to render games at native 1920x1080p 60hz in both 2d an 3d the least,
and by the time it releases we are gonna have 4K tv’s around, so it might have a 4K blu ray player built in

While i would say that next gen consoles should not come out to soon this guy is a complete tard. To say they should not come out at all is the dumbest thing i have heard all month. I expect PS4 and Xbox 720 will be out in 2013-2014 witch gives us 2-3 years left of this gen witch is a good time frame. People are always gonna get consoles though and there are far more console gamers then PC gamers but i dont hear him saying they should stop comin out with new tech for PC’s. I dont see a lot of people gaming on a fu**ing ipod either prolly less then PC gamers so go ahead epic games release your new stuff on the ipod see your sales drop tremendously and stay the hell off consoles you crap pile of a game company. I dont want to see epic games on the cover of any game on a next gen console after this was said. That statement is dumb maybe what we dont need is a gears of war 4 i mean what would be the point in that i argue??

Let’s face it the ps3 and xbox 360 have pretty much outrun their uses. While graphics are obviously better than on other previous systems they are capped out and better graphlc games run noticeably slower in the system. These systems need to come out. Im pretty sure if im not mistaken too the time table between the ps3 and ps4 would be the longest period between releases for the Sony franchise if it comes out when its rumored to in 2013 or 14. You can’t tell me 8 years have gone by and with all the technological advancements and none impact the console gamer. These companies are releasing it because its better so this moron just has to accept it. How sad for him that his company will have to probably makr a gears of war 4 and make probably 50 million profit. If anything he should be endorsing it.

battlefield 3 will be a perfect example of why consoles need to upgrade. granted ea should have at least but the game in 60 frames a second which they did for pc but not console. and they expect to compete with the call of duty franchise. ok but back on subject could you imagine a game running in 240 hz, me i cant wait i have a 240hz 55 inch tv now i was so excited to play xbox on it and it was a major bust the ps3 nor xbox can keep up with the frames per second the newest tv’s are putting out so whoever think’s there shouldn’t be an upgrade is dumb. and the Iphone are you kidding me no one would be able to release any decent games with all the restrictions apple would put on it and touch screen controllers suck.

But your right BF3 is an example. Console getting 30fps and 24 players with less map space and less graphics. PC is like always step above consoles and phones.

Well he’s said some pretty stupid shit before, I’m really not all that surprised now. No, like the PC, consoles will always be around, for very basic reasons- are you going to produce video games on a 3 inch display on touch? no. Not unless you’re a hummingbird.
Capp’s is proof that everyone nowadays thinks they’re some tech guru because they own an Iphone, it’s a careful mixture of annoying, pathetic and arrogant. They seem to just open their mouth without even realizing, and let a lot of dumb shit come out. They don’t really know anything, they’re just making observations on face value and coupling them with old assumptions. I’m still waiting for SkyNet to take over.
Here’s the real deal- the current consoles are already long over due for replacement, they have been for two years. Developers are essentially playing musical chairs with this stuff, there’s simply no room left to move around.
Nintendo already made the first move- Microsoft and Sony can sit there with a smile on their face like a couple of simpletons while Nintendo eats up their market shares if they want, sure. I guess that could happen, but it wont. Everyone seems to be stuck on gaming being all about one thing whether it’s processing power, graphics processing, ram, mobility, connectivity. It isn’t any one of these things, it’s all of them. I’m seeing this coming out of these corporations themselves, with releases like Kinect…am I on fuckin crazy pills, are aliens performing mass lobotomies in the night?
When guys like Capp speak I just think happy thoughts, wait, and let the foul presence of idiocy evacuate.

No matter how great the graphics will be on the iPhone/iPod in 2015,or how fast and great it is,i wont be playing on it,because of its Touch screen controller and tiny screen,consoles are the real deal.
