Did you know that your beloved PS3 console has this ability to play .mkv video files natively, just by pressing the button in your DualShock 3 controller.
No, there’s no catch, you don’t have to install Linux, or streaming it with PS3 Media Server. Like i said, natively, which means it’s operate “inside” using the core operating system when playing your .mkv files in your PS3′s hard disk.
So, how you do it? Introducing Showtime, an homebrew app developed by Andreas Öman for the jailbroken platform which means you need to have your PS3 to runs CFW first before attempting to install this.
What Showtime is, basically, a media player where you can get all sorts of features you’ll expect for a video playing app. Among of the features that are quite commendable is the ability to play .mkv videos (of course), subtitle files such as .srt (note that the main PS3 did not able to do that) and a lot more.
You can get the information about Showtime here, and if you’re on 3.70 firmware, i think you are basically out of luck unless there is a CFW that can contain that firmware.

Since you have to use an outside player it doesn’t play it natively you idiots.

It uses PS3 power, that’s not native enough? Not that you stream the files..

Native means within OS without an additional app needing to be run. This isn’t really news BTW. Showtime has been around playing MKV files for months.
