Here’s why Gran Turismo 5 is better than Forza 4

Forza Motorsport 4 300x168 Heres why Gran Turismo 5 is better than Forza 4The upcoming Forza Motorsport 4 will directly rival Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5 which already has been released last year. But, which one is the better choice for racing game fans?

Dan Greenwalt, in an interview with forzamotorsport.net revealed a bunch of things about Forza 4 and he explained why Forza 4 does not include weather effects and night racing unlike Gran Turismo 5. He said that most of the progress has gone into creating image based lighting model (IBL). However, Forza 4 does include alternate time of the day for a small number of environments.

This is what Greenwalt had to speak out:

“For Forza 4, the majority of our graphical investment went into our new image-based lighting (IBL) model, as well as new material shaders, which give our cars and tracks such a realistic, detailed look. With IBL, supporting the general look of night is not particularly hard.”

“However, we take frame rate pretty seriously—we believe that having a solid 60 frames per second (FPS) experience with no tearing is very important for a simulation racing game. Delivering night is about more than just getting the general look right. As we found on the original Forza Motorsport, having multiple headlight projections with multiple cast shadows is computationally heavy—even using clever tricks like we did on the less powerful original Xbox platform. This makes delivering a strong night racing experience very difficult at 60 FPS without significant compromise.”

“Creating believable weather effects also depends upon gobs of particles and lots of shiny, reflective surfaces. There are several tricks for doing this, but it would still have made delivering the new graphical fidelity of FM4 at a solid 60 FPS nearly impossible in our development timeframe.”

He mentions that they could have make something to add weather and other effects.

“If we cut down on the number of cars on track, used original Xbox-generation car models, dropped to 30 FPS, or (and this would be the most effective solution) built specific tracks from the ground-up to have less detail and thus extra performance headroom, then night racing and/or weather conditions may have been possible.”

“Some of those trade-offs, we just were not willing to do. Others would require time that we used to develop other features in the game—specifically, the new graphical look of the game in general. Night and weather are features we will continue to evaluate as the franchise continues. We’re waiting for the right time to deliver these features to our fans.”

Forza 4 has many many new things added to it that make it better than GT5.

Apart from GT5s very poor background graphics (Lol at the trees) it even had tearing. and making just “some” of the the cars look nice and adding weather which killed the framerates didn’t help it much at all so turn 10 have seen this and learnt from GT5s mistakes.

The Top Gear licence is a huge leap ahead of GT5s

Forza 4 also has so much more to offer online player and headt and shoulder tracking (That’s not eyetracking to the fanboys who don’t understand what it means) is just the icing on the cake.

Thats it ? Thats all you can bring as to a weak argument about GT5 being better than F4? Spare me . . .
OK, GT5 has day to night effects & wet driving

    F4 has
All cars done properly – inside & out
Actual AI – not just all the cars following the exact same line & just smashing into you
    A Proper Top gear license
    Custom Liveries & paintjobs
Far superior tuning & parts options
The PI system so that you cant just overpower the heck of a car just to win races.
Brilliant Action house, Store front & Online racing
If it’s anything like F3, the amount of events available will Blow GT5 out of the water again. I believe F3 had wayyyyyyyy more events than GT5 – & that was F3 not F4

I Had GT5, I played it for a solid week, got to level 28, then just got sick of it & Fired up F3 again & Traded GT5 in.

F4 is going to surpass anything Polyphony can do – Hell F3 is still a more solid, better racing game than GT5 & it come out way earlier

Seriously – this is why GT5 is better than Forza 4?! As said in the interview, if they had to pull back on a lot of what makes Forza, then they’d be able to use the night time and weather effects.

For me, Forza is about the realism and fluidity – that’s not something I’d want to lose.

GT5 is better than Forza 4. you gotta be kidding me lol…

first of all your judging a game that hasn’t been out yet

second by the way your explaining the post your sounding like a GT5 fan boy

GTA 5 has over 1000 something vehicles of those 1000 only 200 or so are built with quality the other 800 look like crap…..also the cars sound like crap..the partnership that Polyphony has with Top Gear sucks especially the rolling start challenge lol…

    F4

    All cars built with quality
    Better Ai’s
A better Top Gear partner ship
    Custom Liveries, paintjobs etc.
large variety of tuning and painting
Great auction house that has some influences from Amazon
and lastly Forza 3 demolished GT5.. imagine what Forza 4 well do

P.S the next time you write a article about a game that hasn’t been release yet ….play it yourself before you start making childish topics like this “Here’s why Gran Turismo 5 is better than Forza 4″

    Regards, Mike

Why is this article so behind the times? Sorry but this little post by Josh starts with a fundamentally flawed concept… because Forza3 is already the King of Racers!!!

Just look at the Metacritic scores between Forza3 and GT5… go on do it.

When you dig deep enough you’ll soon see that gt5 is a flawed mess… choppy frame rate, 800 cars ported straight from the ps2, environments ported straight from the ps2, shocking anti-aliasing problems with pfx, a poorly implemented and dated damage system, a poor collision physics model and a clumsy dated interface.

gt5 has already been well and truly beaten.

Forza4 is a vastly superior simulation/game to gt5 (I know I know… it ain’t out yet… but just by watching the videos and reading the in depth previews from games journalists is enough to see that Forza4 is a massive leap above Forza3). Seriously… Turn10 has surpassed Polyphoney in every department now… the crown safely rests with Turn10 and the Xbox360.

Since when have metacritic or gamerankings scores determined which game proves most dominant in a genre? Sales are the proof of the pudding largely because it demonstrates how commercially successful a game is, which is undeniably the most important factor for any game. I’ve seen countless games with great reviews have mediocre sales and vice versa.
As a franchise Gran Turismo has been going a lot longer and in terms of sales walks all over Forza. I’ve never understood why people even compare the two, Forza is barely classed as a simulator, why on earth would you have the ability to rewind time and undo a mistake completely? It makes the game far too easy. Not to mention Turn 10 seem more focused on making money then making a good game hence why they’re releasing all the titles so close together.
Only area I can see Forza 4 being better then GT5 is in customisation as always. Gran Turismo 5 has so many more features to make up for it, online mode is likely going to be better, competitions, support, updates…etc.. are outstanding.
Ask yourselves, what does Forza offer that Shift 2 doesn’t?

Only gamers who really rate Forza and the Xbox 360 in general are American, funny that…..

seems medzz3ro is asshurt. sales here only means the GT fans are ignorant.

Its pretty obvious that Forza is the more quality franchise.

They make games 3x faster then Poliphany and they are all AAA (90+)….where as GT is one game per 5 years and is reduced to an embarrassing AA.

Wake up. Gt is a sloppy franchise with a extremely long dev cycle. Forza makes AAA games and they do it on time.

    @ MEDzZ3RO

‘ Only gamers who really rate Forza and the Xbox 360 in general are American, funny that….. ‘
    Really?! I’m English… I rate Forza3 above gt5.

The main reason ps3 owners bought gt5 in the truck loads is because there was nothing else worth playing on that technically crippled piece of junk. The other reason is because most ps3 owners live in the past, thinking that the GT series is still relevant and up to date… well, sorry to break it to you, it most definitely is NOT. Polyphoney dropped the ball badly, GT5 is an utter mess… 6 years to create something so buggy, so inconsistent graphically… it’s a joke mate. But then you sonyfanboys just lapped it up, you don’t care if you get 800 ps2 cars shoved into the box, you don’t care if you get ps2 environments get stuffed in your face… you’ve got you rose coloured spectacles on. The ps3 fanboy is utterly deluded, he/she just cannot see objectively and the sales figures prove this conclusively.

Forza3 is far more polished and far more competent a game than gt5.

Forza4 is a huge leap above Forza3… therefore it’s in it’s own league when compared to gt5… Polyphoney are just not talented enough to compete with Turn10… it’s a FACT. I know, it’s a sad thing to admit, but Polyphoney rested on their laurels with gt5(it’s a mess). Turn10 was the under dog coming into this generation, they had the passion, they were daring, they had the drive to be Number1… Turn10 kept innovating… Polyphoney are dying because they are not.

    Very biased and weak argument.

GT5 went the quantity route and didn’t exactly turn out very well.

I don’t know about all of you guys but the frames are a very big part of games especially in a racing game.

I’d rather take a game that runs at 60fps and has different times of day for most tracks (if not all tracks) and has varied temperatures that actually affect the tires accordingly than have Night racing but at the cost of the frames dropping all the way down to 30-35fps.

Having Soft tires on GT5, the tires will wear at the same rate during the day than it will at night even if the temperature is lower a night.

I guess amount of cars is another arguing point, but I think the real question is, do you want a vast amount of quantity of cars or a good handful amount of quality cars.

Personally , I’d rather have Fully customizable cars like Radical, Gumpert, and Koenigsegg.

But again, what do I know, I’m just a “fanboy” right? ;)

I like both games. They are both great, each game is better than the other at certain aspects. I bought GT5 and will be buying F4.

I think Dan that you forgot to mention, you can’t do it because your base platform isn’t as advanced as the PlayStation 3… I dearly apologize. I’d rather have a company attempt to put something than say, nah let’s not try at it… Let’s get this game out so we can get more money! Oh wait you are under Microsoft’s control, it adds up now :) Gran Turismo 5 is about driving not how pretty it looks. Any Forza fan saying GT5 only has looks and doesn’t focus on the details of the game, read this article again. They are focusing on graphics, looks and customization over the driving physics. Why make a game where it’s about cars but you do not make them drive right? That’s like cooking ravioli, then wondering why you don’t have french fries finding out that you really wanted french fries.

I prefer Forza over gran turismo. The reason is that I like to play games that are easy to beat and take absolutely no skill at all to play. When I race a car, I like to be in first place at the first turn and finish a 2 lap race with a 20 second lead. Thats the only way I prefer to race so therefor I prefer Forza. If I wanted to actually challenge myself and actually have to use this stuff called skill and strategy, then maybe I might buy gran turismo….Oh and nobody who has played both games can actually tell a difference in graphics. when cars are rendered at 500,000 polygons on both games, you can’t honestly tell the difference.

I could go into dozens of reasons why Forza 4 has taken the crown from GT5, but i’ll get to the point. Forza 4 is more enjoyable, entertaining, and satisfying to play than GT5. GT5 is dull and sterile. FM5 is a rich community experience.
