Earlier today, Alan Kertz, core gameplay designer for Battlefield 3 answered some questions from fans on Reddit. One of the more important questions was the user interface for Battlefield being overhauled in order to clean up the various problems it has. Especially on elements like the minimap.
Simply put, Kertz said that he is aware that the user interface needs improvement, and that the Battlefield community has come up with some pretty neat solutions, and that they listen to the feedback. He didn’t explicitly promise that they would be corrected at all however. It might be, it might not be, but what he said is really marketing speak for “Whine more at my boss”.
If you don’t play Battlefield 3, here is a link to an image that compares minimaps from Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, Battlefield 2, 2142, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3. You can see it progressively gets less useful as the series goes on. The minimap is the most important thing there is in any online game’s interface, as knowing what is outside your field of vision gives a much larger edge than you can imagine.
