The amount of console releases for Blizzard games is quite low, and the only Diablo title to be released on a console is the original Diablo, which was quite a decent port. Jay Wilson, Diablo III’s director, said that they wish to make a console version of their upcoming release that feels that it was made for the console. This has been on the board for a while but the odds are beginning to look better.
Wilson said to Game Informer “We don’t want to port it. We want to build it for console. There’s a key difference. Certainly, a lot of things get brought over, but a port is trying to take a PC game and graft it onto a console.”, truer words have never been spoken.
It is possible to make a Diablo-Style game for the console. Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, though rather repetitive, is a perfect example of such hack and slash games on the console. He continued to say that everyone wants Blizzard to have games on the consoles, and console makers are quite eagar in the industry.
Many ports are just an abomination compared to the PC version. Console wars aside, there are many games that simply work better through mouse and keyboard. Games like Diablo that require a degree of precision and rapid changing of active abilities is a perfect example.
Wilson kept at what he was saying, and made sure to say that they haven’t officially announced a console port of Diablo 3, because they like announcements to be a big deal, but their challenge is in getting a console team together. He also said that the fans don’t believe Blizzard when they say they’re going to make a console game because they never deliver. Part of the reason being they felt they didn’t have an appropriate product.
