Chrono Trigger coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch

The 1995 RPG, widely hailed as one of the greatest RPGs of the SNES era and of all time will be released on the iPhone and iPod Touch next month. Square Enix announced this today as you can see here on their blog.

Chrono Trigger’s praise comes from its time-traveling based storyline, multiple eras of the same world ranging from 65 million years in the past to the distant future. Heroes from many eras seek to solve the mystery behind an alien being named Lavos who surfaced in 1999 AD, and how it has influenced the shape of the world. The game’s large cast, the time travel having a noticeable effect on the gameplay, world, and sidequests was absolutely mind-blowing for the time, as was the sheer content and graphics. The special effects in battle and the battle system itself using an ATB system like many Final Fantasy titles gave spectacular and fast-paced gameplay rarely seen in RPGs.

The game uses a completely new interface that puts the touchscreen to its full use, but preserves the original graphics used by the original game. This causes a bit of dissonance in the visuals with the very clean and glassy interface on top of the 16-bit sprites only a few-dozen pixels high. Regardless of this, Chrono Trigger is truly a very good game and should be played by everyone at least once.

It is not known if this edition of Chrono Trigger has the new content added to the DS port of the game. The DS port’s tacked on content was a cause of criticism from fans of the game, with several pointing out the repetitiveness of the new sidequests, having to go through the same dungeon a dozen times minimum along with unavoidable battles, and how many of the new areas could have simply been integrated into the game itself.
