DICE: Priority is balance, not features

Alan Kertz said today that the biggest priority for the dev team is to resolve balance issues in Battlefield 3, as opposed to adding new content. Even to where it’s a higher priority than scope toggle that some fans have been asking for.

This may be upsetting for some people, but I have had some hand in designing some small games in terms of advice and numbers. Nothing major or notable, but I can assure you that the more things you add, the more difficult it becomes to balance. If you do not nip balance issues in the bud right away, you will have them pile on and on until the entire game is heavily unbalanced. To rebalance an unbalanced game, say Final Fantasy Tactics, it could take years of number crunching, tweaking, edits, removals, and fine-tuning because of the sheer number of factors and mechanics present. Multiplayer games especially since one person hogging all the glory makes the game unfun.

The more content a game has, the more you can break it wide open.
