In a clip on GameInformer, game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann talks about the story of The Last of Us in detail.
They explained that the game will take place 20 years after the virus outbreak that destroys the population of the Earth.
There are safe zones guarded by the military where survivors will gather. In times of such hardship, even minor violations will be punishable by death and whoever is detected to carry the virus will be euthanized.
Joel is a contraband merchant in his 40′s and has taken on a job to smuggle 17 year old Ellie for reasons yet to be revealed.
Ellie lives in a military orphanage her whole life but gets into trouble and needs to leave. The job goes wrong and the pair decides to go on a journey to find Joel’s friend that lives outside of the quarantine zone.
Druckmann added “being a Naughty Dog story, things aren’t always what they seem.”
“We can say now we don’t want to end on a cliffhanger. We don’t like when games do that. It has to be all encompassing,” he added. “If it does well and people want more then we’ll discuss it.”
