In a video interview with Game Informer, audio lead Phil Kovats talked about what they hope to achieve from an audio standpoint in The Last of Us.
He has worked on games like God of War 3 at Santa Monica Studio and Flow. He was also the lead sound designer for Uncharted 2.
The Last of Us he explains will be very different from Uncharted, while Uncharted is the “triple A, B movie”; The Last of Us is going for something “more subtle”, more “grounded”.
Sound will also affect the gameplay and not just to immerse the player into the world. Players can use sound to determine the position of enemies.
He also gave another example of how sound will affect gameplay, “Guys you’re trying to scavenge something from were playing some music and you’re trying to sneak over there, what happens when they turn off the music? Now, they’re hunting you and you have to know where they’re coming from.”
