Android and iOS leaders of portable gaming market

by Sharizan Abdullah - on Nov 10th 2011 - No Comments

When we think of portable gaming, we think about Nintendo first and mostly. With their early dominance with the Gameboy line of handhelds and later on the DS line. They were the clear cut leaders even with the inclusion of Sony and their PSP. But there are new players in the arena that is taking the market share away from these two behemoths.

Both Android and IOS are fast taking over the market with their solid quality and premium games being offered as low as $0.99. With the market shifting to emphasize more on digital downloads, Nintendo and Sony is finding it hard to compete with their old model of physical games purchases.

Flurry, a mobile applications analytics company, released a report today that shows the distribution of U.S. portable game software revenue over the last three years. IOS and Android have managed to grow from only 19% of the market in 2009 to an amazing 58% in 2011. While Sony and Nintendo has dropped from 11% and 70% in 2009 to 6% and 36% respectively.

This shift in revenue is leading people to question whether Nintendo and Sony can compete with this two new players in the market. Even with this huge shift, there will always be a demand to play their exclusive IPs, so all is not lost.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus to sport 12-megapixel camera?

by Amir Ariff - on Oct 18th 2011 - No Comments

samsung galaxy nexus 232x300 Samsung Galaxy Nexus to sport 12 megapixel camera?People all over the tech industry is looking forward to the Google Samsung event where it is expected that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to make it’s first appearance.

Due to that, there have been a lot of leaks surrounding the Ice Cream Sandwich powered Android device.

Here’s what has been said according to one blog:

  • Dimensions: 5.4in x 2.7in x .35in (which is insanely thin, however the blog also mentions that its .45 inches at its thickest part)
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4460 processor
  • 4.65-inch 720×1280 AMOLED HD display (which may just be the Italian translation for Super AMOLED Plus)
  • 5-megapixel CMOS rear camera with LED flash, capable of video capture in 1080p
  • 1.3-megapixel CMOS front-facing camera
  • NFC!!
  • 1GB of RAM, 16/32 GB of on-board storage

Surprisingly, we only see a weak camera on-board. This is very disappointing considering how iPhone 4S amaze a bunch people with their impressive snaps.

So, is there is still hope for Samsung to implement 12-megapixel camera much to what has been showcased on Nokia’s N8?

Of course, we still need to wait until the official event that will start soon.

iPhone 4S triumph over Galaxy S II and other high-end Android devices

by Myona News Team - on Oct 11th 2011 - No Comments

iphone4s 300x218 iPhone 4S triumph over Galaxy S II and other high end Android devicesDespite clocking at just around 800 MHz, the newest addition to iPhone series is giving a rough time to most of the high-end Android smartphone devices that sporting around 1.2 to 1.5 GHz in the market, particularly the big-hit Samsung Galaxy S II.

A smaller clock not only results in higher yields from the factory, but possibly a lower operating voltage as well.

Lowering a CPU’s core voltage, means a greater-than-linear decrease in consuming the power, turning out the marginal loss in clock speed a good pick.

At a lower operating frequency than its Android competitors, Apple does have to exploit its advantages in software to avoid any tangible performance penalties.

Apple has always done this very well in the past, so most of the Apple fans out there don’t expect the loss of frequency to be a big deal to the few who do cross-shop iOS and Android.

In any case we expect that Android’s upcoming reiteration, Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) to improve the scores on most of the devices.
