Is Jeremy Lin overrated?

by Sharizan Abdullah - on Feb 18th 2012 - No Comments

79c59 120215043739 quan jeremy lin story top1 300x168 Is Jeremy Lin overrated?

Jeremy Lin has taken over the sporting world by storm. The Harvard graduate came out of nowhere and is currently leading the New York Knicks to a 7-1 record over their last 8 games. They lost for the first time today to the Hornets ever since Linsanity had his breakout game two weeks ago.

He is definitely performing and playing well in the basketball mecca that is New York but this begs the question; is he overrated?

Before I say anything, keep in mind that I love the game and is not biased towards anybody and is very happy for Lin, what’s he doing right now is great for not only himself but for the game. Even though he has had a phenomenal week, we might be crowning him a little early.

In the stretch where they had seven straight wins and one loss coming today against the Hornets, the teams they played against had a combined record of 89 wins to 155 losses. That is well below .500.

The only good team that they played against was the Lakers, beating them 92-85 and Lin scored a career high 38pts in that game but everyone knows that the Lakers have trouble defending the PG and Lin just went off.

Lin’s numbers from the past eight games are impressive, 24.6ppg, 8.6 apg, 1.87spg, and shooting 50% from the field which is always great coming from your PG.

There are some negatives however, in that same stretch, he is averaging 5.7 turnovers (he had nine today against the Hornets) and is only shooting 29% from three.

Playing in Mike D’Antoni’s system always helps PGs get good numbers (just ask Chris Duhon) and while some may consider this as nitpicking, his true test will be when they start playing the elite teams.

He still has some ways to go, his decision making and outside shot needs to improve, lets see if he can be consistently good for the rest of the season.

Eli Manning 600x337 Giants win Super Bowl 2012, 21 17 over the Patriots

Eli Manning and the New York Giants have once again defeated the New England Patriots to secure the Vince Lombardi trophy winning Super Bowl XLVI (46).

Eli Manning was named the MVP of Super Bowl XLVI and had the winning drive at the end of the game with less than a minute left on the clock giving Tom Brady one last chance to secure the win for the Patriots.

With five seconds left, Tom Brady threw a Hail Mary down the field into a sea of Giants defenders and was the ball was batted away.

This is Eli’s 2nd Super Bowl Championship and also his 2nd MVP, Tom Brady passed Kurt Warner for most passing yards in the Super Bowl. It was his 5th Super Bowl game having won three.

Super Bowl 2012 550x309 Super Bowl 2012: How the Patriots stack up against the Giants

Offense

Both are pass first teams, but both are dangerous in different ways. New England looks to pass the ball in the middle of the field. Their main targets, Wes Welker and tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez will be looking to make the short passes and turning them into big gains.

New York meanwhile will look to pass the ball outside most of the time, with Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham being deep threats.

Comparing both teams’ star quarterback, the nod is given to Tom Brady with him throwing for 5,235 yards and 39 touchdowns so far while Manning managing 4,933 yards and 29 touchdowns. Manning also threw more interceptions with 16 compared to Brady’s 12.

When it comes to rushing, the New York Giants are dead last in the league while the Patriots are ranked 20th overall.

Offensive line play will be the deciding factor, the Patriots has two Pro Bowl guards in Logan Mankins and Brian Waters. In the Giants win over San Francisco last week, the offensive line gave up six sacks to Manning.

Defense

Defense is not a strong point for both teams, Giants rank 27th overall while the Patriots rank 31st.

Giants main defensive strength is the front line, boasting a line that includes Jason Pierre-Paul (16.5 sacks), Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, the Patriots will have a hard time defending against the pass rush.

The Patriots in the middle have Vince Wilfork at nose tackle and Mark Anderson who recorded 10 sacks this year. Linebacker Brandon Spikes will also be a factor for the Patriots.

The secondary are weaknesses for both teams, the Giants gave up 28 touchdown passes and a hair over 4,000 yards while the Patriots gave up 26 touchdowns and 4,703 yards.

Special Teams

Both teams’ returning have not been spectacular this season but neither of them have relinquished a touchdown.

Both punters match up well but a slight edge is given to the Patriots for the kicker position. Stephen Gostkowski of New England have not missed yet in the playoffs while Lawrence Tynes, his New York counterpart have missed four out of eight tries from over 40 yards this year.

Tell us in the comments below who are you rooting for this year’s Super Bowl. My vote goes to the Giants.
